Staying healthy at Christmas; Tip #4

Staying healthy at Christmas can seem tricky;  especially if you don’t understand your changing nutritional needs.  No matter what your Christmas lunch looks like, no doubt there is plenty of it.  Mobile Rehab is providing a series of top tips for staying healthy at Christmas.  This is to help you set good habits and carry them through to the new year.

Tip #4 – Know your changing nutritional needs

Did you know that you have different nutritional needs at different stages of your life?  If you are not meeting these basic needs, you may find that recovery time from illness and injury increases; and no-one wants that! Your nutritional needs can be calculated by an accredited dietitian. They are based on your body’s need for breathing, blood circulation, physical activity and digesting food. Your nutritional needs change throughout your life and depend on factors such as activity level and health state (such as critically ill, post-operative, or health conditions like chronic kidney disease).

Here are some of our top tips for staying healthy this Christmas:

  • Do you drink enough water? As we get older, our bodies aren’t as good at telling us we are thirsty.  Make a habit to drink a glass of water with each meal.  Also, whenever you reach for a snack, have a glass of water first!
  • Eat enough fibre. Digestive health can be improved by consuming high fibre foods such as brown rice, whole-grain cereals and bread, fruit and vegetables.  It can also help protect against diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
  • Enjoy a varied diet!  Making your meal colourful with different vegetables can be a great start.
