Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time for education, support, and hope. While much of the focus is on early detection and treatment, it’s equally important to be aware of the journey that follows a diagnosis. For many people, a challenging but manageable part of that journey is dealing with lymphoedema.

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling, most often in the arms or legs. It occurs when the lymphatic system—a vital part of our immune system—is damaged or blocked. This damage prevents lymphatic fluid from draining properly, leading to a build-up of fluid in the tissues.

After cancer treatment, lymphoedema can develop in a limb or other parts of the body, depending on the affected area. This is because surgery or radiation therapy can sometimes damage or remove lymph nodes, disrupting the normal flow of the lymphatic system.

Why is it Important to Get Expert Care?

While there is no cure for lymphoedema, it can be managed very effectively with the right care. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment can significantly reduce swelling, manage discomfort, and prevent the condition from progressing.

Trying to manage lymphoedema on your own can be difficult. That’s why seeking the guidance of a specialised lymphoedema therapist is so crucial. A qualified therapist can provide a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

How Our Lymphoedema Service Can Help

Our team of dedicated and compassionate therapists understands the complexities of lymphoedema and the emotional toll it can take. We offer a comprehensive and holistic approach to care, including:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle, hands-on technique used to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage fluid drainage from the swollen areas.
  • Compression Therapy: Using specialised bandages, garments, or wraps to reduce swelling and maintain a healthy limb size.
  • Exercise Programs: Tailored exercises designed to improve lymphatic flow and flexibility while strengthening the affected area.
  • Skin Care Advice: Guidance on how to properly care for your skin to reduce the risk of infections.
  • Education and Self-Management: Empowering you with the knowledge and skills to manage your condition at home and in your daily life.
